Health in All Policies (HiAP)

Santa Cruz County Health Services Agency has been selected to receive a short-term planning grant for the 2014-2015 Health in All Policies (HiAP) Project from the National Association of County & City Health Officials (NACCHO) and CDC’s National Center for Environmental Health. This planning grant creates an exciting opportunity to work collaboratively with stakeholders to learn how health policy intersects with non-health related activities of government systems and other agencies and to consider ways of integrating health policy in these non-traditional sectors to improve our community’s health.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  • What is Health in all Policies?  Health in All Policies or “healthy public policy” is based on the idea that health starts with where people live, work, learn, and play and that individual and community health is influenced by more than just individual choices.  HiAP is a strategy which aims to include health considerations in policy making across different sectors that influence health, such as transportation, agriculture, land use, housing, public safety, and education.  HiAP re-affirms a comprehensive approach to bring health, well-being, and equity considerations into the development and implementation of policies, programs, and services of traditionally non-health related government systems or agencies.
  • Why should we convene to discuss this issue? NACCHO's Health in All Policies Project aims to increase awareness among decision makers and other stakeholders about the environmental public health implications of policies and to build the capacity of local health departments to be involved in cross-sector work with the goal of improving community’s health.
  • What can we do to address this issue? Our county faces a variety of complex issues that significantly impact health which are often driven by multiple factors outside the sector of public health.  With your participation in the upcoming Santa Cruz County Health in All Policies meeting, you can take part in the discussion of ways we can partner and implement HiAP in our south county community.
  • What is a Health Impact Assessment? Health Impact Assessment (HIA) is a practical approach that uses data, research and stakeholder input to determine a policy or project's impact on the health of a population. Click here to view information sheet.
