What is Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT)
Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) is the use of medications in combination with counseling and behavioral therapies for the treatment of substance use disorders. A combination of medication and behavioral therapies is effective in the treatment of substance use disorders and can help some people to sustain recovery. MAT is a whole-person approach that provides effective treatment for opioid and alcohol use disorder. MAT combines FDA-approved medications to treat these disorders along with counseling and behavioral therapy in the comfort and privacy of the Health Services Agency Clinics.
The medications Buprenorphine (for opioid use disorder) and Naltrexone (for opioid and alcohol use disorder) suppresses cravings and allows people to get back to their lives. Some people stay on medication for short periods of time while others continue use as necessary to prevent relapse or manage pain.
